What is /dev/watchdog, what does it do?

Also, some kind of watchdog hangs in the processes, the process is unkillable, is it some kind of timer?

/dev/watchdog is the interface to the watchdog (if you have one). The watchdog process is a daemon running this timer. The watchdog timer is a piece of iron, which periodically sends a signal "everything is OK, the system has not hung." If this signal is not present for a long time, it reboots the system in hardware.
