What is better static methods in the model for working with the database or the repository pattern?

How adequate is it to use static methods in the model, and in general to use the model not only as a reflection of the table?
On the one hand, there is less code and no interface wrappers, on the other hand, there are problems with testing the controller, or am I mistaken?
