What is animation design?
Everything is so ambiguous that you can get confused. Someone says that you need to use After Effects, but there are rumors that in the latest versions of this program you cannot save in gif format, so that you can later put it in a portfolio case. For if you transfer the animation from the after effects to Photoshop, then to save it as a gif, the file size will be too large, which is not acceptable for the case. And the quality of the gif in Photoshop is not very good. Eugene from uprock generally says that studying after effects is not advisable for this now.
What are the alternatives to this program?

Keep your rumors aside for mostly uprock rams. I am using Media Encoder
1. AE is still some sort of base. I have several acquaintances in animation, this is their working tool.
2. Photoshop is not so bad in fact, besides, it can edit both in a storyboard and video.
3. In the end, some animation can be created in code mode (SVG → SMIL).
To animate principles, framerX or invision interfaces, it's easier there and there is an import from a sketch / figma.
1) Create animation in After Effects, render to video
2) Convert video to gif in just two clicks on this site: https://giphy.com/
