What is an interesting and unusual topic for a diploma?

Direction "Applied Mathematics and Informatics", specialization "System Programming and Computer Technologies".
What is offered by the department is basically either purely mathematical topics that are far from reality, or all sorts of cms, a Linux distribution, an android application, etc.
I would like something more fun, and ideally - so that it can be developed further, but at the same time it corresponds to where I study.
There was a similar question recently, but it all started and ended with computer vision, but there are probably many other interesting things that I don’t know about yet.
