DDoS Protection

What is a DDoS attack? How to protect yourself?

Today the host sent a letter. That is all I have. The site has a lot of traffic (about 55 thousand views per day), but today it shows that the load on the channel has increased several times. I've never experienced this before, what should I do? I don't even have access to the server. Only SSH console in VMmanager. OpenVZ virtualization.
The most interesting thing is, if this is DDoS, then who needs it, a regular site does not sell anything, just information with databases. All content is free.

One of your virtual server IP addresses has been blocked. The automatic monitoring system has detected anomalous incoming traffic to IP address *********** during the last 10 minutes: an average speed of 297.2 Mbps with an average packet size of 804 bytes. Such a load disrupts the network and creates problems for other data center clients.
