What information should be studied for a bot that collects information (certain words) from a media site?

For interest, I want to write a bot that would collect mentions of the right words from media sites. Like NYTimes, WP and others. The problem is that the maximum wrote a bot for games (Vovku) about 5 years ago.
I would be very grateful if you indicate which sources are worth studying in detail.

You can read about Data mining. For a simple task, what boomwest said is enough.
