используем zfs на ubuntu 16.04. Скоро 2 года как пользуемся. Примерно 10 разных систем. И конечно raidz2(лучше бы 3). RAM 16gb без ecc.

Depends on the number of files per fs. For Ubuntu, the native fs is ext4 and it will be enough until your number of files exceeds several hundred million files

zfs eats memory, although it's not a question to put many gigs of RAM now. there are problems with screwing to the linux.
ext4 cannot dynamically allocate inodes, i.e. there is a chance to run into the limitation of the number of files in the fs and the bypass will only be a reformatting ...
some say btrfs falls, others are quite stable.
the backup format with macros is not painted - in the form of an archive or a simple stupid copying of files ??

No file system guarantees the safety of files, no matter how cool it was. Take the one you know best.

EXT4 is enough for such tasks.
No need to store millions of files on one large volume - it's hard to manage later - it takes a long time to copy and even delete it for a long time.
Store in archive files or virtual disk images (loop devices) due to sparse, you can get the same placement density.
