What does the gulp-once plugin do?

I'm not smart enough to understand what the gulp-once plugin does .

The description says that it doesn't care about the dest/build folders and will unload the cache anyway.

i.e. he caches it once and will unload it from the cache for me until the file changes?
if so, what is the benefit? fewer resources used?
