What does "Research" mean?

There is a notorious picture " Web developer in 2017 ", and in the first part ("Need to know anyway") there is a fad "The ability to explore". What is understood, or what do you understand by this concept, specifically for a web developer ? Is there some kind of methodology, or does it come down to "googled - looked at all the results from StackOverflow - chose the working option"?
