2. This is the name of the utility in unix systems for managing passwords. I do not know the true history of this name. I will assume that in the days of ancient dos, when there was a limit of 8 characters in names, the word password was shortened like this. Access fit into 8 characters.

I don’t understand what kind of nonsense they write above about DOS, when Apache never worked under it.
Obviously, this is due to the 8-character file extension length limit for some file systems. Usually it is 3-4 characters.
