What does cache have to do with proxy?

Greetings!
I'm just a teapot and I want to understand if the cache is part of the proxy. By definition, these are different technologies, but the same googling in Yandex came across a proxy cache and got completely confused. Can a proxy work without caching? What is their general relationship like?

Proxies were originally invented to "cut" traffic and limit visits to sites. Plus - to reduce traffic in principle. Therefore, the proxy caches requests that go. You went to Yandex - the proxy cached it, the neighbor got on Yandex - the proxy gave him the cache + some changes, if any. In order not to waste traffic
Yes, the proxy can work without caching. Depends on settings
