Cloud computing

What do you use cloud storage for?

For example, I, a dark person, registered an account on Dropbox and used it stupidly dropping files for backup there.
And only today I found out that you can synchronize a folder on your computer with a dropbox account and work with it, as if it were a disk on your computer, by installing a special dropbox application, of course.

Immediately there was a bunch of thoughts about how it is convenient and how it can be used. For example, I have been using Outlook as a task scheduler, organizer, calendars, diaries, notes, etc. for a long time (okay, don't swear!). Outlook suits me completely, it has everything I need and it's all connected in one program! But there is a problem - work from different computers. In order to fully have access to all your data from different computers, you need to carry the Outlook pst file with you (the base account file, where everything is actually written). In principle, there are no big problems with this. I always have with me, wherever I am (where work is supposed to be) my mobile screw, where all my work and this very pst-file lie. Outlook on those workstations where I work (at home, at work, on a laptop, etc.) immediately catches this file (if the screw, of course, connected to a computer) and works with it. Thus, all my data is always with me! Such a cloud of the 19th century turns out! ))
And this “discovery” about dropbox immediately made me think that I need to store the pas file in the cloud, and configure Outlook on all computers to connect to the file that is there. And voila, you no longer need to carry a screw with you! Unless, of course, I understood everything correctly ... I
began to think further and the idea came up to store all my working files in the same place. After all, as I wrote above, I work both at home and at work. Therefore, everything that you have worked out, for example at home, you have to throw on the screw and carry it with you to work in order to continue working with these files there. And if there is a cloud, it turns out that I can store everything there. And do not save files there every time, but simply work from a folder that is synchronized with the dropbox.

But for example, such an option for web developers: after all, many people use Denwer. When installing Denver, a web-server folder is created, where all the files of the server and sites are actually stored. It turns out that in order not to produce these servers on each computer, this folder can also be put in a folder synchronized with the dropbox and live happily ever after? Then the need to carry a screw will disappear immediately?

Here I sit and think about it all. Now I'll come home and try to deal with these options. But before that, I decided to ask the people if I am reasoning correctly, have I missed something in my reasoning? And the most important question: what ELSE can I use, or rather, what do YOU use cloud file storage for? What benefits have you gained and how has your life been made easier? Or are these services exclusively for working with backups, but not for synchronization? Those. threw personal pictures there and everything, rejoice that there is a backup copy!

Or you say, "Here, damn it, America discovered ..."

And the second main question: how much does this synchronization (when I work with a file that is synchronized with the cloud) slow down the system and the Internet? After all, it turns out that the file must be uploaded to the cloud for synchronization every time it is saved, and this is constant traffic and all the consequences ...

I try to move all multimedia content from new sites to S3, backups from databases also go there.
It turns out that the load on the host server is less, the site itself becomes light, it weighs little, it is easy to backup and simply transferred because it is only php + links.
But for now, this is just an experiment for me.

The guys also recently tried the SpiderOak service
. So far, only satisfied. previously used Dropbox and a few others.
The main thing here is everything like other services, but there are a couple of nuances (I won’t say which, I analyzed more than 20 similar services and spent more than one day on a PC) that distinguish SpiderOak from others.
I'll hint
- the first encryption at all levels
- the second one cannot delete files on all Devices (Rob PC, Home PC, Tablet, Laptop, etc.) by hacking one
- the third deleted files from the PC
are saved - the fourth version is saved by changing any file
