What do you think is the best linux distribution for desktop?

You need to put on one computer, but you can not put Windows. Judging by the latest posts, the last ubunta has lost ground, so what do you advise then? Thanks

I will put the djent. Because everything is simple there, what you collected - on that you fly.
You do what you want, you put what you want, what you need and how you need it. No impositions.
But I will not say that this will be an alternative for a housewife. Here you need a certain skill of Linux zadrotstva.

I vote for ubuntu. Some time ago a friend of mine installed a Karmik Koala, 9.10, for his mother. The fact that this is not Windows, the mother only found out because her "Word" document did not open at work.
I installed my girlfriend a couple of weeks ago on 11.04. There were difficulties at first, the interface sometimes made me wonder, looking at the desktop: “So what next?”. Now it’s not bad, the “watch mail / movie / work in the office” function is 100% performed.
In general, it would be interesting to know what the system is for? For home, for work, for, ahem - sorry! - games?

Fedora:
1. No and never will be unity
2. systemd
3. yum can choose faster mirrors
Gentoo's red-eyes can be ignored. It goes away with time.

Optimal for whom? Optimal for what?
Gentoo is optimal for me, Ubuntu for my mother.
What will the computer be used for?

If I were you, for parents, I would not install Windows. As you pick up viruses - you will understand that you made a mistake.
Ubuntu For parents - this is what you need!
Security, availability of a large list of programs and ease of installation, friendly interface, etc. save you a lot of problems in the future. Other systems may have many advantages over Ubuntu, but there are also many disadvantages.
Fedora is still a bit of a buggy system. No matter how - a test site for RedHat. If you put it in, you will soon hear “Oh, why did the panel disappear / turn off ?!” etc. ))
Well, in other distributions, for the desktop, I did not find anything interesting for myself. Maybe they have enough usefulness, but for parents, I doubt that they will be needed.
As a last resort, before installation - go to youtube and see how they look like systems, or download LiveCD / LiveDVD and see what you get. In the case of LiveCD/LiveDVD, you can even give parents a chance to feel the system and make a verdict.
PS.:
They can write a lot, but you have to think. Indeed, in case of trouble, non-advisers will then restore and configure the systems =)

Install Ubuntu 10.04, but I strongly advise against 11.04

Debian Stable (and if it's a desktop, you can also Experimental)
+ Gnome :)
In many cases, Debian is more stable than Ubuntu.

Ubuntu, the latter also works quite fine after a small file, like any other Linux.

put ubuntu on a netbook and desktop for parents a few years ago, they use it and there are no questions.

For the desktop Fedor or Susya - there the sneakers are well assembled (I tried kubuntu out of interest, it almost got worse). If you have hands, the best option is Debian unstable / testing - file it a little and get a machine for ages.

I have Ubuntu with Unity - I live and do not know grief. I can't even imagine how I lived without it before. And the new update killed all the glitches known to me.

Delivered to parents Linux Mint Julia (KDE). The questions were at the beginning, but there is localization, everything is in Russian and, sort of, understandable. Haven't been called for a long time.
Recently he climbed onto it himself - so far everything is fine, nice interface, a large community.

Install Ubuntu, you can even use the latest version (it seems that proprietary firewood for ATI video cards was added to it). Or Linux Mint, if you want to look like Windows out of the box (one panel, pre-installed and configured wine, and other gadgets)

If the user is interested in delving into the structure of the system and it will not be difficult for him to solve any problem in the system using the forum / hands, then I will advise Agilialinux , a fork of MOPS. Active Russian-speaking community, good localization, convenient package / assembly system, in the origins of Slack (although already far from Slack) well, I like this distribution.

Support the Russian manufacturer! It's either ASP Linux or ALT Linux. You should know that ASP Linux is based on Fedora Core (aka RedHat Linux) and ALT Linux is based on Linux Mandriva (aka Mandrake). I am for the first option - ASP Linux Desktop Edition.

I recently switched to Pinguy .
Before that, there was 2 years of Linux Mint. But in the last year, there was a feeling that the development of Mint began to slow down, nothing really interesting was happening. I was looking for something new, I thought at first to install Elementary OS, but eventually settled on Pinguy. Finished ubuntu with ruffles and checkers.
