What do people do in Data Science?

How is data analysis, machine learning going? What do data scientists have to face every day, or is it more correct to call them "scientists"? Of course, they are more involved in mathematics itself than programming. But how does it happen? There is one scientist and a project, let's call the project "Quantum Computer", conditionally clone scientists, teach them some knowledge from narrow specializations and start development. Everyone will do their own thing and it will all make up a single whole mechanism that will eventually achieve its goal. And what do they actually do? For example, there is "Deep Machine Learning", the meaning is clear, but how it happens is not. Please help fill this gap in my head.

Data science is a general term for a set of methods for analytical work with data, from old-fashioned statistics with all its statistical criteria and confidence interval calculations to modern machine learning methods, including neural networks, for forecasting, classification and other poorly formalized things.

The meaning cannot be understood without understanding the process!
