What do I risk when I disable SSL/TLS in Composer on a local server?

Hello. When I try to install Laravel via Composer, I get an error:

[RuntimeException]                                                           
  The openssl extension is required for SSL/TLS protection but is not availab  
  le. If you can not enable the openssl extension, you can disable this error  
  , at your own risk, by setting the 'disable-tls' option to true.

If I disable SSL/TLS what do I risk? I have a website on a local server, I don’t understand what risks there might be.
