What do developers / creators of programming languages earn?
Do people who have made their own programming language just use it at work, or do they earn money too?
I understand that they can receive money from donations, but are there other sources?

They don't earn. Almost all languages in the world are open source, developed either by the community or by NGOs owned by large organizations. For example, Java is being developed by a separate company, a subsidiary of Oracle. Go is Google. Quite often, the language appeared as a necessary tool, and then it was simply brought to the masses.
