What do degrees mean in the Yandex.Maps Metro module?

The Yandex.Maps API (though still in version 1.1) has a module that searches for the nearest metro stations. Documentation can be viewed here . It has such a parameter as span - the size of the area (in degrees), inside which you want to search for metro stations. I can't figure out what "area size in degrees " means?

And what else should it be in if all the coordinates on the map are in degrees? Longitude and latitude.
