What direction of higher education should be chosen for gamedev?

After graduating from school, like many people of my return, I faced the question of choosing a direction in a university. There is a sweet dream of one day making games, namely engines and things like that. Intuitively, I want to go into the development of computer systems, however, such faculties specialize in creating firmware for microcontrollers, which is a bit different from what I want. Then the choice falls on software engineering, but there most universities offer to write desktop or mobile software for work or communication. So I'm wondering where to go?

As I understand it, the question is about programming and not, for example, art or game design.
Most importantly, game programming is conceptually the same as programming anything else. That is, if you learn how to program well, you can make games.
The second most important thing: in the career and technical growth of a programmer, theory and experience are more important than knowledge of specific technologies - they change every year. That is, it is not so important which engine you know and which libraries. It is more important that you know the theory on which all this is built and can quickly switch to the right tools.
So.

most universities offer to write desktop or mobile software for work or communication.

Here and go. The better the university and the higher the passing scores, the more likely it is to gain useful knowledge.
If you want to dig in the direction of engine development, then:
- Get ready to bot a lot. There is no need for a lot of engines in the industry, the competition for the places of their developers is great.
- Choose a specialty where there is a lot of mathematics (different) and a lot of near-programming things: software architecture, operating systems, machine learning, etc.
Well, in general, about the development of games:
- romance is much less than it seems;
- much more work than it seems;
- there is not as much money in the industry as in other places, although they are;
- most game developers make a low-grade product their whole career - there is zero pleasure from this.

For any specialty where there is:
- at least some kind of programming - I don’t care what kind - it’s all the same to finish my studies
- there is at least a basic course in computer graphics
- they give good all sorts of mathematics - discrete, matrices, that’s all.
