You just need to link to images via http, not https. There is no support for SSL certificates (many), all modern clients can display images from links, you can not encode in base64 (unless your clients have windows xp), you can generally find a support table, there are even old clients where, on the contrary, they cut out base64 and if I'm not mistaken, outlook 2007 does not support it, but it is in most companies.
