Any installation of software should push away from the tasks that this software should solve. On bare Windows, based on your question, it will be enough to install VLC and an archiver to understand rar, and this is 7zip (free).

We put all the updates on the system. Codecs CCCP (for x86) or k-lite (x64), aim + MPHC, 7zip, browser of your choice, there is a license for MS Office, install it, otherwise LibreOffice, sumatra pdf, antivirus purchased or from MS, instant messengers, well, specifically the right software for the job.

Usually I have: archiver (7-zip, winrar), codecs + player (k-lite codec pack, classic player comes with them), uninstall tools - a program that completely removes other programs with tmp and registry cleaning, browser, skype.
Well, in principle, the whole set is "by default", then highly specialized software already comes.

-Winrar (7zip)
-TotalCommander (how can you work without it xs.)
-WireKeys - hot keys, clipboards, macros and a bunch of everything.
-FireFox - (+addblock+noscript if you want to surf safely)
-Daum PotPlayer - omnivorous player
