What communication methods are there between server and client application?

Good evening. Suppose there is an application similar to bacula, or corporate antivirus. It consists of a central application for data collection, action cooperation, and subordinate client applications.

What types of communication can you suggest? For example, how to tell a downstream application to start analyzing the system on which it is installed. I couldn't think of anything other than API.
