What can periodically break TimeMachine backups on Ubuntu and what else can be done about it?

I have a home server under Ubuntu 18 and a deployed system to work with TimeMachine. Somewhere once a month the backup breaks. Sometimes it can be repaired, sometimes after a few passes, sometimes not. I'm done. It takes a lot of time to check over the network (even via Ethernet), it takes a long time to transfer 200Gb, I can’t set up a local check of poppy images under Linux (or it’s impossible in principle, I don’t remember), and I don’t really want to make a backup backup.

Actually, the question is: why do backups break, moreover, so randomly? I checked the disk on the server (not Raid), everything is fine with it. Is there any experience of deploying image verification under Linux?

The problem was a slowly dying SATA controller on the motherboard. Switching to external completely solved the problem.
