Is it possible to somehow speed up the idea so that it works fine on a macbook air with 2 gigs of RAM?

Maybe. By renting a VPS with 4 GB or more, installing an IDE there and working via remote desktop. Or replacing it with an old version, or with Eclipse, or even better with an old version of Eclipse.
