What cable is needed to connect an external HDD to a Macbook?
Greetings, dear toasters. I got a 2017 Macbook and I have an old but very good external hard drive. It connects to the computer with a USB 3.0 A male to male cable (that is, a usb plug male from 2 ends). And as you know, since the 2016 version, MacBooks have 4 Type-C. And I decided to buy a USB A to USB Type-C cable. I ordered it from Gearbest. He came and plugged it in and nothing worked. Mac didn’t see him at all, and the hard one didn’t even blink a diode.
Although everything works through the adapter (an adapter for an OTG phone on the one hand Type-C PAPER, and on the other USB 3.1 MAMA) The
question is this. Not a working cable, or I ordered the wrong one?

you bought a cable to charge your phone, it cannot transfer data at all (there are not enough contacts in usb-c).
Also, the native cable from the usb-c kit cannot transfer data, it can not be used to connect a usb-c disk or a monitor, only charging)
