Interested in the following. If I take, say, John Carter and publish a book on my website, will I get anything for it?

I'll try to answer with copyright in mind, are there published books online? If yes, then post it, provided that you do not use these materials for commercial purposes. If they are not in the public domain, then in this case there is the possibility of publication, but that's another story, I note that everything is within the law.
