What are you using on desktop?

After many years of using Ubuntu + Gnome, I became more and more annoyed by the policy of Cannonical, with each release I have to spend a couple of days on finishing.

After the abandonment of Gnome 2, this began to manifest itself with even greater force. Gnome Classic is being phased out of support, bugs hang for several years.

I'm thinking of trying something else. What you need: the old Gnome2 interface (bottom and top panels, quick launch icons, clock, tray, logout menu - in general, the standard Gnome 2 set), so that with the new version you don’t have to spend days on finishing.

Tried using tint2 but didn't have the patience to set it up. I tried Mate, but got scared - terrible, buggy. I tried Linux mint last year, but demolished it - something was wrong with the panels, I don’t remember what anymore.

In general, it is interesting to know what you are using, especially if you have used ubuntu and gnome2 before.

I switched from gnome2 to unity on a working PC, but, however, only on the fourth attempt and only at the end of this spring. I practically didn’t bother with finishing - probably, I’m just tired of it. And, you know... got used to it. Everything is not so bad.

Work - debian squeeze
laptop - ubuntu 10.04
home pc - linux mint debian (latest with mate
) gnome, nautilus, gedit, etc - everything has new names and I always forget them.
pps at the moment I'm thinking about a debian based distro with gnome3 and gnome-shell.

I use Ubuntu with Unity on both laptop and desktop. Even on a 12.10 tablet you can already use it.
I started on 11.04, then a buggy 11.10, which stopped being very buggy after a week and a half from the release, really stable on 12.04, and now I've been sitting on 12.10 with Unity6 for more than a month - there are bugs, unpleasant, while I endure.
Unity isn't as bad as hardcore Gnome2 fans make it out to be.
I am glad that everything works out of the box, even in STALKER I occasionally run under Wine on stock drivers (IMHO, fglrx from AMD is a real bad thing).

XFCE is lightweight, fast, and just works.

The distribution kit is arch (but this is not for long: I feel that I will have to switch to Jenta).
Desktop - IceWM, set up a lot of keyboard shortcuts + launching gmrun via Super + Space.

Used until recently Fedora, OpenSUSE. Fedora liked more.

Debian sid + awesome. Configs have not changed for 2-3 years, although the system is regularly updated.
Although, judging by the fact that you did not have the patience even for tint2, this set is clearly not for you.
Try just changing the environment to xfce / lxde. They are not so difficult to set up, and faster than a gnome.
