What are the ways to transfer contacts from the site to a smartphone?

The site has a standard contact section. In a good way, smartphone users can make an “Add to phone contacts” button and transfer something like a vCard.
As it turns out, Safari doesn't allow vCard downloads. There are bikes on StackOverlow on how to pass a .vcf inside an ics file.
There are links like tel: and mailto: - but I want to transfer the contact to the phone.
How things are in Android - have not yet had time to look
Has anyone already tried to do this?
