What are the prospects for the development of mesh? What will the hardware implementation look like?

Hello.
There are many mesh networks - zigbee, z-wave, wi-fi (802.11s). Surely there are others. Is it really wifi mesh that should be considered the most promising now, or are there other, more recent and interesting solutions? What will the gateway between the internet and the mesh look like? for this you need a device with 2 network cards - one for mesh, the other for the Internet; Or is there some other way? Are there ways to implement mesh on ARM controllers or even arduino, or do they not have enough computing power for this?

There doesn't seem to be a lot of computing power here.
There is a hub about mesh networks. As far as I know, the most promising protocol is Cjdns . An implementation for OpenWrt is being made or has already been made for it. Two network cards are not needed, but how exactly everything works there - I did not understand.
