What are the pros and cons of opening your own media?

We have a small site where various services are provided to people, plus content is provided. There is also content that people themselves write (such as mini-mini-mini habr). There was an idea - and not to open the media?
Does anyone have any idea what are the pros and cons of this idea? I was tormented by Google, everywhere you find the answer only in the context of comparison with the paper media.
We don't have politics or anything, so there's no reason for us to shut down or anything like that.
How to open the media is not interesting, but I wonder what kind of buns from this or what kind of stones (underwater).
