Burglary protection

What are the basics for hacking?

Being engaged in the backend, one question began to torment me, but how the server and everything connected with it works inside.
What I'm leading to: I want to learn how to raise servers, learn how to maintain them, configure them (access rights, etc.), learn how to write protection for them and hack them.
What is worth seeing, what books to read?
Do not judge if it was not expressed correctly, because while working and making small programs in PHP, this thought came to me just now. XD
PS OC Linux Mint installed yesterday (if there are good manuals for it for noobs, then please tell me)
It would probably be right to ask the question: what layer of skills does a novice hacker need ^-^
