What are the areas of systems programming?

I would like to know if the development of the Linux kernel belongs to system programming, or is it a more separate area? Or is system programming a development above the core? Or maybe it's a branch of system programming, because. as I understand it, the development of the kernel is significantly different from the development above? If you are so not versed in IT that you do not understand the field, then what is the point of being interested in it?
If you are interested, then just study something, in the process you will learn all this.
