What are sprite engines?

I stumbled upon the "Sprite Engine" Sprite .. I forgot how to proceed, which was deleted. Didn't find others. Do you know any "sprite engines"? Or can you explain to me what it is?

It is also a 2D image, which usually tries to mimic 3D (or other entities) and is always facing the player's eyes. The trick is that it only imitates something complex in a simple way.
Accordingly, a sprite engine can be an engine that processes and calculates their movement and change at the right time.
And Sprite is a bald drink in the morning, it removes dry wood at a time.

Just today, an article was published on Habré about the Phaser engine - https://habr.com/ru/post/563294/
I recommend creating scenes, loading sprites, sound, sprite animation, processing keystrokes, etc. A small scroller, just for learning.
