Take some of your / someone else's online project and make a client for it.
I did this with spchat.ru, I liked it :)

Here's what I came up with, in order of complexity:
1) A quadratic equation solver
2) A puzzle (for example, the towers of Hanoi)
3) A simple tcp / ip chat
4) Some kind of music player with a search for mp3 files on an SD card
5) Your own navigator based on some API (Yandex-maps, OSM or Google Maps)
Along the way, you will understand the UI, network, multimedia and navigation.

A working call recorder.
The idea is that it is convenient to have a history of correspondence in ICQ / Jabber.
So why isn't she on the phone?
I use such a program on the N900 - it has helped more than once.

An application for teachers, lecturers, coaches and others to mark those who came to class. A sort of cool journal, with the ability to:
- notes for each student
- mark students from different groups in class
- move students between groups, keeping the history of their visits according to the schedule of the previous group
- transparent export of all this household to a computer or to some online service ( in some kind of calendar, for example).
- scheduling
- make various notes about the reasons for the student's absence (missing, sick ...)
- reschedule group classes
- shift them in time so that the groups following them also shift accordingly
- the ability to place a student in a group in a tricky way: when some of them go to different groups on different days of the week. There
are such applications, but they are all crooked and not very convenient, and most importantly, everyone has excellent opportunities to drive some data into applications, but to receive and viewing this data is a real torment.

The simplest is the file manager. The basis can be sketched in the evening, and then it is good because you can freely add new features module by module.
Tried pieces of 5 different options, all were with advertising / paid. As a result, for about half a year I lived with a self-written one in order to feel it)

Take something simple, but which is not free.
For example, share the Internet from a computer to a mobile phone or reassign buttons (complex actions). But quality.
And if there are no ideas - to join a difficult cause - there will be more benefits for society than to take on a lot of loved ones, but with youthful maximalism.
