Both of these are needed. But you need to start with books. And on video courses to reinforce knowledge.

Video courses are good, especially if they help you get into the topic relatively faster than a book. However, courses alone will not suffice for a general understanding.
Be sure to read Java books like Java Philosophy , Algorithms in Java .

Combine.
Example for C#:
1) Start with: Andrew Troelsen The C# Programming Language 5.0 and the .NET Platform 4.5 (6th Edition, 2013)
2) Design Patterns

it is better to program in parallel,
it doesn’t matter, according to books or video courses.
free video courses on C# on www.microsoftvirtualacademy.com
on java free on intuit.ru, paid on google play from 1C: mobile courses (3 parts for $ 3, preparing the 4th)

To learn Java, you first need a computer and an installed JDK with JavaDoc. Books and videos on Java are all deeply secondary.
