Updating ubuntu on hosting?

I host sites on a purchased virtual dedicated server (hosting from IHC). Ubuntu is installed on it:

Distributor ID: Ubuntu<br/>
Description: Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS<br/>
Release: 8.04<br/>
Codename: hardy<br/>

I want php 5.3 and last stable version. Hosting does not have any special settings. If I update, will everything go to hell?

why will it fly ...
if you go directly to LTS, then everything will be ok.
Only Zends will really crumble.
You can write to me if something breaks after the update (well, or kick me in ubuntu.ru/irc/webchat )

What PHP do you have now? Version 5.3 is not fully compatible with previous versions, so it may fly.

Shouldn't. And there - the devil knows what you are using. For example, the same Zend Optimizer under PHP 5.3 does not exist. There should be no problems with updating the system version.

Ask the host. On a VPS, when upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04, the system may stop loading altogether.

From LTS to LTS it should be normal.
This is a completely harmless experiment if you make a backup . A backup of a virtual machine should generally be simple - a mouse from the hosting provider's web interface.
