Unix-like OS for media server

Linux user level: installed by manually partitioning the disk, watched, installed programs, built gnome from freeBSD packages.
The desire to build a media server, but rather it will be a router + file cleaner + torrent downloader + VPN-server + web-server + sql-server on it.
Questions:
1. How good is freeBSD for this kind of needs? At first glance, what you need, although it is difficult to set up.
2. If freeBSD is not the best choice, what would you recommend? freeNAS, Slackware and Gentoo are not offered. Since I am not strong in terminology, I will try to clarify to the best of my knowledge. I 'm interested in choosing a distribution kit not in terms of choosing a window manager, but in the category, in fact:
Ubuntu-based (Fedora, SuSe, Mint, etc.) / Debian / Arch.
Thanks everyone for the replies! So it’s clear that you can finish any distribution kit for the above needs and use at least not a server ubuntu, but I wanted something more meaningful than put any distro and file it :) And I got this meaningful

Zentyal Community Edition (based on Ubuntu, has a web management interface, a multifunctional server for home and business, if something is missing, you can go to the console and install it like in a regular ubuntu)

I would very much like to know the decomposition basis due to which Fedora and SuSe turned out to be Ubuntu-based for you.
If it's Linux, then I think you first need to choose a package database. That is, you will build applications or use binary DEB or RPM packages.
Personally, I'm more comfortable with DEB, because in case you have to make a package yourself, creating a DEB is easier than RPM.
And then put in fact, some sort of XBMC.
