Two questions about 3G traffic in Ubuntu 10.10

Hi all.

Given: whistle Huawei E1550, Ubuntu 10.10.

Nubian questions:
1) I connect the whistle to the Internet via wvdial in the terminal. Accordingly, all the time the terminal hangs in open tray windows. How is it decided?
2) how to competently and conveniently keep a simple traffic record specifically for a 3G whistle? I stuck iptraf, but again, the problem with the constant hanging of the terminal with the process and not very convenient accounting - only from the moment the program was turned on and too detailed, such detailed protocol monitoring is not important for the desktop.

Requesting advice, thanks.

1. Write the necessary commands into a script and put them into autoload.
2. When I had to watch and save traffic, I used 3proxy.

What's stopping you from using Network Manager? By the way, he knows how to count traffic for each interface separately, if I'm not mistaken.
1. I recommend guake.
2. I also recommend using a proxy server.

1. sudo aptitude install yakuake, or something similar, is very convenient.
2.Look for mobile partners, a very convenient soft, with the only drawback, it does not fold to tray. will also replace the terminal in this case.

And when you connect to the Internet in ifconfig, a new interface is not created? If it is created, then you can see the traffic there.

Ubuntu has an application called Download Manager, you can add iptraf there, for example.
And to hide the terminal window, I use guake.
