Trouble installing NVIDIA driver on Acer Aspire 5750G-2314G50Mnkk (Ubuntu 13.04)?

Greetings.
My problem is the following: I decided to switch to Ubuntu OS (x64) after Google made fun of the eyes (link to the bug tracker ) of Chrome users on Windows. So, yesterday I spent the whole day fiddling with installing Ubuntu, until I realized that immediately after booting from the disk (before choosing a language), you need to press Esc, select the language and set the nomodeset mode through F6. After that, with grief in half, I managed to start the installation process, and all because of the NVIDIA GeForce GT520M (CUDA) video card.
As soon as the installation process was completed, I realized that the graphics work on the built-in from Intel, and as soon as I tried to install proprietary drivers from the official site, after rebooting I got an empty desktop with wallpaper and a mouse cursor. I could call the terminal via Ctrl + Alt + T, launch a browser and everything else from the terminal, but I still couldn’t understand what I did wrong and how can I still install the drivers on the video card in order to fully experience all the beauty of this wonderful OS called Ubuntu.
Here are links to manuals that I have tried. I will say right away that yesterday I managed to reinstall the system three times in order to try new manuals on a clean OS, but everything went unsuccessfully.

  • help.ubuntu.ru/wiki/nvidia_videocard_driver
  • www.ubuntukiller.com/2013/05/install-nvidia-driver...
  • help.ubuntu.ru/wiki/bumblebee

There were many, many other links, but none of the options described helped me see a full-fledged OS after installing the NVIDIA driver. I really hope that someone on Habré will help with the solution of the described problem. I'm ready to start the installation process again and throw off any information before and after installing the NVIDIA driver.
On the Ubuntu forum , two members have joined to discuss my problem, but so far without success :-(

I describe the solution to my problem: I
installed a clean Ubuntu 13.04 (x64) and immediately followed a simple instruction - wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee#Installation
Then, just in case, I installed mesa-utils - help.ubuntu.ru/wiki/mesa-utils
AND finally installed Intel® Linux* Graphics Installer version 1.0.1 - 01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads/2013/intelr-linux-graphics-installer-version-1.0.1
As a result, everything works, but I don’t like how it doesn’t work smoothly animation when minimizing and maximizing windows, also brakes are observed when trying to switch between applications via Alt + Tab.
I would also like to understand how to install the latest version of the official NVIDIA driver, which, according to American users, already has support for Optimus technology.

Unity does not start, once it happened.
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.sample /etc/X11/xorg.conf
After that, you can reload the x, and everything will work in VESA mode. Then we go to the control panel --> additional software sources --> proprietary drivers, there are probably several of them for nvidia. We try to apply everything in turn, cutting down xorg.conf. I could write something a little wrong, there is no Linux at hand.

Read this doc , everything is written in it correctly.

Q: Can I use only Nvidia graphics card?
Oh no. The Nvidia graphics card is only responsible for processing graphics data, the Intel graphics card is responsible for the output.

Well, here's another useful article .

You have two video cards: from NVIDIA and Intel. In this case, you can't just install drivers from NVIDIA, because you will get what you get, namely non-working X's. I won't go into the technical details of why this happens, it's all on the wiki . You just need to apt-get purge all nvidia packages, and then follow the current instructions .
PS Do not use PPA ubuntu-x-swat if you don't know why you need it, and how, in which case, to roll back and fix everything.

It seems that they wrote that starting from version 319.12, the proprietary driver supports optimus without Bumblebee.
I haven’t tried it myself, because on 12.04 both cards are perfectly installed and working through Bumblebee.
In extreme cases, the Intel one works fine by itself, 620M is 30-40% faster than the built-in one.

All the same, I would recommend setting up bumblebee.
Well, now it's hard for me to remember the sequence, besides, I needed a working CUDA5.
Some steps may be redundant on 13.04.
For 12.04 something like this:
(mainly for CUDA)
sudo apt-get install freeglut3-dev build-essential libx11-dev libxmu-dev libxi-dev libgl1-mesa-glx libglu1-mesa libglu1-mesa-dev
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia linux-headers-generic
For 13.04 maybe enough (https:// wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee) only
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bumblebee

Can anyone tell me how to install the driver according to this manual correctly and whether it is worth it at all ? It turns out that version 319.23 should already be with Optimus support?

Is it normal for compiz to eat about 500 MB of RAM?
