Transferring a site to a new domain - what about backlinks?

Let's say I decide to move the site to a new domain. I redirected to this new domain, extended it for another year just in case. But, back links are not going anywhere, as they pointed to the old domain, they will be. And when a year has passed .... they will still point to the old domain, only there will be no redirects anymore.
How to be with them? There are thousands of them. Somewhere there is no way to update them.
