The site has several regions. Subdomains? Or is it a thing of the past?

It is clear that until now the majority of federal players sit on subdomains for each region.
But not all, there are major players working without subdomains.
And some new ones also appear without subdomains.
So the question is how to properly promote MI with regional proposals now?

I work with subdomains if they are commercial sites. The results are good.
I went through all the options for assigning regions to the main domain - the result is not very good. But if you only need a couple of regions, then of course you can work with one site.
But if you work with geo-independent requests, then you don’t have to worry about regional affiliation at all.

See how big companies do it: www.apple.com/ru/ , www.microsoft.com/ru-ru/default.aspx , www.samsung.com/ru/ , www.lg.com/ru , www.nokia .com/ru-ru/ etc.

Unfortunately, now for a new site, subdomains are the most “safe” option if we are talking about buying links.
True, this entails a lot of additional work.
The presence on one site of several pages for different regions is a sad result.

Alas, I am not a SEO specialist, but those who told me a couple of weeks ago that regions should not be taken out as subdomains. They say one big site will be better promoted than many small ones.

And so, and so can be done.
If these are just offices / points of issue in different regions, then you can limit yourself to one site.
If the content differs greatly by region, then it is better to split it into subdomains.
In both cases, it is useful to read Yandex's recommendations about regionality help.yandex.ru/webmaster/?id=1108952
