The f1-f12 keys do not work correctly on macbook air 2017, what should I do?

Updated to macOS Catalina and volume/brightness keys etc stopped working.
Tried in different ways and with and without Fn, tried to pick the keyboard settings, all to no avail.
The keys themselves work, but not as they should. Help, I beg you.
