Text not showing in frontend?

Hello.
For output I use language. There is a translation in catalog/language/product.
$_['text_sort'] = 'Sort By:';
But in frontend I see text_sort . Also valid with text_limit, text_default and other translations.
Everything is fine on the backend. I use Ubuntu+Apache+php 5.
What could be wrong?
