Suggest a language to learn

Hello cheaters!
Tell me what language to learn for writing desktop and server applications.
One of the main points is execution speed, the second (less important but desirable) is cross-platform, and the third is a free compiler and development environment. For some reason I hate hacked software.

UPD: I write in PHP and Javascript

Java, definitely, easy to learn on your own, lots of tutorials, cross-platform, free, great IDE Eclipse, well, what else do you need to be happy

I can recommend a book , read it, and there you will already understand what you need. There is no panacea and there is no “correct” answer, in fact, this is one of the reasons why there are so many programming languages.

If performance is important, then C/C++.
For desktop C++/Qt.
