SSL certificates as a program licensing mechanism

Greetings.

There is a task of developing a mechanism for licensing an application utility. The utility works with a remote database via an SSL connection.

So the question arose, is it possible to tweak the licensing functionality on SSL? Interested in the opinion of the community - experience, pitfalls, etc. In addition to SSL, what are the most appropriate mechanisms for organizing such licensing?

Thank you.

Two-way authorization by certificates, client access is regulated by the revocation of a client certificate with status 6 (On hold). It is necessary to deploy a certification authority and an interface to it. In skillful hands, the task is solved in a couple of days, including the development of architecture.

Please explain what the entire licensing mechanism will actually be based on. I will not understand in any way how the client certificate in this case differs from the random chain of bytes registered on the site?
