I plan to create a third level domain name (forum.example.com).
Is it possible to issue a regular ssl certificate for a subdomain without buying a wildcard? If possible, what type is preferred?

A certificate for a subdomain is no different from a certificate for the main domain.
Take Lets Encrypt, the release is done directly on the hosting server, specify a specific subdomain in the settings. Well, or just through a DNS record and a website:
