Sprites versus fonts?

The issue is using icon sprites versus icon fonts on large datasheets with about 10 icon buttons per row.
Boostrap 2.3.2 is used, scrolling brakes are noticeable when the number of rows in the table is ± 30.
The project is large, it is not yet profitable to transfer to version 3 for the sake of tests, perhaps one of the Khabrovites knows whether switching to icon fonts will solve the problem?
