Smart House
Kulver_stukas, 2018-01-12 13:34:04

Smart home and IoT - how much is this topic really interesting now in Russia?

Not as a niche toy for the super-rich like Hi-End Audio, and not as entertainment for geeks like 3D printers. To what extent is this a potentially massive topic for the average Russian (living with his wife and 1 child in a 2-room apartment in a panel house)?

To make it interesting is a matter of marketing. The very topic of a smart home is really intriguing, this can be seen from the number of arduino / raspberry people on YouTube who are trying to make something themselves.
But the market for ready-made devices is practically empty - most companies release their own, completely closed infrastructure. And when you are forced to buy products of one brand, and even with a huge overpayment, which is not reflected in the quality of the device itself, then this is sad.
Yes, and most often these are controlled devices and automation, and not a smart home at all.
It turns out that really something suitable is done by special firms - to order and at a high price. Or people make their own, if skills allow.

For an ordinary family living in a socket, a smart home is an absolutely useless thing. Nightlights with a light sensor, if needed, are bought at the nearest market, for $1. Gas leak detector = $10. All other problems, such as turning off the light, turning on the TV, are solved by switches and a remote control.
Of course, to play - yes, it's cool. But, in reality, in an apartment with 2-3 rooms, all this will not be in demand by 99% of the population.

I don't agree about the geeks at all. Read reviews like this . It describes what needs to be done to implement a minimal scenario with a light and a motion sensor in the kitchen.
After that, return to the idea of geeks: what kind of technology should be in order to use it and not be a geek? Turnkey solutions are not just expensive, they are ready-made solutions. Try to repeat something similar and not become a geek at the same time.
So there are three options:
1. buy on a turnkey basis and enjoy comfort
2. assemble automation (not a smart home) of the simplest scenario from the "box" and calm down
3. become a geek, save money and enjoy comfort
Choose :)

Most likely just an expensive toy or a complex of expensive toys with notifications on a mobile phone. (management from mobile devices as the main one I consider a dead end, a normal implementation should think for the end user)
The concept of a smart home is certainly good. But de facto there is only home automation. And most likely not completed to its logical end. Somewhere I read how the owner of a house with a "smart" house installed watched a video broadcast from a video surveillance camera via the Internet as his own house was burning down. I will not voice a hint of unprepared functionality.
But if there are circulation! cheap! solutions that will perform all the functions assigned to it, that is, there is a chance that it will take off. But again, this is a double-edged sword. iron is one thing that can already be found almost cheap. And setting up end sensors and actuators is another.
