There is nothing complicated in these constructions if you understand the principle of declaring pointers, and this is in any textbook. Maybe this will help - How To Read C Declarations .

Honestly, what is an "Array of pointers to a function" ... 50 pointers to one function or what?

1. A two-dimensional array of functions that return a pointer to a function that returns a pointer to char.
Correct if not. Confusingly, oval brackets precede square brackets.
