Should you choose RainTPL or Smarty?

I decided to completely rewrite one of my modules for DLE, and it just so happened that the standard DLE template engine does not suit me at all (and I don’t like it, it lacks capabilities). The module is designed for non-standard news output, there will be a lot of different options for setting the output, with which the standard template engine will cause many problems and most likely brakes.
So I'm looking towards RainTPL 3 or Smarty .
Both templating engines are basically similar in terms of writing variables for an ordinary mortal (for a user who has installed the module on the site and customizes the template for himself).
I personally liked RainTPL more, but I didn’t work with Smarty at all, so I want to hear the opinion of experienced comrades dealing with these template engines. Maybe there are some clear advantages of one of them over the other? Or obvious jambs?

I use smarty, it's very convenient, for many years of working with it, many plugins have been written that simplify development.
Look also in the direction fenom works very fast!

according to benchmarks, RainTPL 3 will be faster, but more functional - Twig
