Should I use SVG sprites?

The thing is.
The site uses a decent amount of sprites and there are currently two sprite options: the default .PNG and @2x.PNG for Retina displays. I'm thinking of converting everything into one SVG image and using it, positioning images via positioning: .element { background-position: -10px -10px; }.
Good idea? What are the nuances?
